Imphal, September 19, 2025: A tragic ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur’s Bishnupur district has left two personnel dead and five others injured, marking a fresh wave of violence in the restive state. The attack, which occurred around 5:50 PM near Nambol Sabal Leikai along National Highway 2, targeted a vehicle column of the 33rd Battalion of Assam Rifles traveling from Patsoi to Nambol.
The fallen soldiers, identified as Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap, were hailed as heroes by the Assam Rifles leadership. “Their sacrifice in the line of duty strengthens our resolve to protect Manipur’s peace,” said a statement from the force. The injured personnel were swiftly evacuated to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, where they are receiving treatment and reported to be stable.

The ambush site, just 8 km from Imphal’s airport, lies in an area no longer under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, highlighting the audacity of the attackers. No group has claimed responsibility, but security forces, including the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police, have launched a massive joint operation to apprehend the culprits. The area has been cordoned off, and additional troops deployed to prevent further incidents.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” and vowed a robust response to ensure stability. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh visited the injured at RIMS, expressing solidarity and urging unity against such violence. The incident comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur, where he addressed the state’s ongoing ethnic tensions and met displaced communities.
Manipur has been grappling with unrest since May 2023, driven by clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups. The Assam Rifles, tasked with both border security and counter-insurgency, has been a key player in maintaining order, though it faces challenges in navigating local sensitivities. This attack underscores the fragile security situation and the need for sustained efforts to restore calm.
As investigations continue, the nation mourns the loss of its brave soldiers. Stay tuned for updates as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
