Tripura, 10 Sep 2025: A woman passenger traveling on the Silchar–Agartala bound train was caught with a huge consignment of brown sugar at Teliamura Railway Station, triggering widespread buzz in the area.
Giving details of the incident, Teliamura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jayanta Kumar Dey said that acting on a tip-off, Teliamura Police along with Customs officials set up surveillance at the station. When the train from Silchar stopped at Teliamura, a passenger identified as Madhabi Dey from Karimganj was detained on suspicion.
In the presence of the Sub-Divisional Administration’s DCM and other officials, her belongings were searched, leading to the recovery of brown sugar worth around ₹60 lakh in the market, the OC claimed. He further added that a case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused and further investigation will follow.
The most striking aspect of the case, however, is that while Teliamura Police achieved this major success at the railway station premises, the Government Railway Police (GRP) remained completely inactive. Allegations have surfaced that even as police conducted the joint operation, the GRP had no clue about the incident. Some quarters even allege that the GRP officials deliberately turned Teliamura Railway Station into a “narcotics corridor.”
