Tripura, 3rd Sep: A tenth-grade student committed suicide by consuming pesticide after being accused of stealing twenty rupees. The incident occurred in Kuchainala village under the Kuchainala Panchayat of the Surma centre.
The deceased has been identified as Roni Das (16). He was a student in the tenth grade at Kamalpur XII School and was a meritorious student.
This past Monday morning, he took twenty rupees from his father, Jewel Das, and went to the shop of one Dhan Singh in the village. Suddenly, the shop owner accused him of stealing twenty rupees from the shop’s cash box. He then took Roni to his house behind the shop. It is suspected that he was perhaps beaten and humiliated there. He was later released.
A carpenter, Nitai Das, who was present in front of the shop, witnessed the entire incident.
Later, unable to find Roni, his father, Jewel Das, went out searching for his son. Jewel Das was constructing another house near the main road. He went to the half-built house and found Roni convulsing after having consumed pesticide. He was immediately taken to the Kamalpur BSM Hospital. From there, he was referred to the Dhalai District Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was further referred to Agartala GBP Hospital. However, he passed away that very night.
Before consuming the poison, Roni had written on a notebook on his study table, “I did not steal, they are lying.”

Meanwhile, Roni’s father, devastated by the death of his only son, fell ill and had to be hospitalized.
Today, the villagers gathered and condemned the incident. Roni’s father has also approached the Kamalpur police station seeking justice. The villagers have submitted a written application to the police station demanding an investigation and justice for this incident.
No one can accept the untimely death of a promising young boy for a mere twenty rupees. Roni’s father, mother, and grandfather are all broken and weeping. Roni’s father, Jewel Das, is a pump operator by profession.
