Agartala, Sept 2: Tension gripped the capital after Kanchanpur-Dasda MLA Philip Kumar Reang lodged an FIR at the NCC Police Station on Tuesday against four persons, alleging they issued death threats to him and his family at the MLA Hostel in Agartala on Monday night.
According to Reang, around 10 p.m. on September 1, a group led by Pathik Dev Varma, son of Jishnu Dev Varma, along with Pathik Debbarma, Ajay, and another unidentified person, barged into his government quarter (Room No. 209, MLA Hostel, near ILS Hospital) in an inebriated condition. He claimed the accused restrained him, interfered in a family discussion, and threatened to mobilize 400–500 BJP workers to kill him and his family.

The MLA further stated that he was forced to seek refuge at fellow legislator Biswajit Kalai’s quarter for safety. “The threats were direct and violent. My family members and I felt completely insecure,” Reang said.
Later, speaking to the media outside the police station, Reang confirmed that a formal complaint had been filed, naming the accused. He added that the police, including the Additional SP, SDPO, and the Officer-in-Charge, had been “very cooperative” and assured him that the case would be treated as a serious crime.
MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who accompanied Reang, said, “We have lodged the FIR clearly mentioning names. We also highlighted that the accused threatened to bring hundreds of BJP workers to attack him. We are thankful for the police’s prompt cooperation and also informed the Chief Minister and the DGP, who assured us of security measures.”
When asked if the matter could be resolved outside police intervention, Reang responded, “So far, we haven’t received any positive response from them. For now, the FIR is filed, and police will act according to law.”
Police sources confirmed receipt of the FIR and said investigations are underway.
