NE, 16 April 2025: Marking its deep-rooted connection with the state of Tripura, the 6 Assam Rifles paid tribute to its legacy by presenting a replica of a historic Burmese bell to Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, the royal heir of Tripura on 14 April.
The 6 Assam Rifles, which once served as the 1st Bir Bikram Manikya Tripura Rifles (1st BBM Tripura Rifles), was originally the state’s military force before India’s independence.

This historic unit played a significant role during World War II, bravely engaging in battles against Japanese forces and earning two Battle Honours – “Arakan I” and “Arakan II.” In recognition of their courage, the chief of the Utanu tribe in Burma gifted a bronze bell to Jemadar Maher Singh Thapa of the 1st BBM Tripura Rifles. The bell was meant to be presented to the then King of Tripura as a token of respect and gratitude.
Following India’s independence, the state force was reorganized as the 6 Assam Rifles in 1950. At that time, Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi handed over the Burmese bell to the reformed battalion to honor its glorious past. The original bell now rests at the Assam Rifles Museum located in Shillong.
