Agartala, April 11: In a significant move aimed at enhancing scientific farming practices, soil testing has been conducted for 5,173 farmers across various agricultural subdivisions in West Tripura district for the financial year 2024–25. The initiative, taken up by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (West Tripura), is part of an ongoing effort to assess soil health and determine land suitability for cultivation. According to official sources, the district-wide testing covered multiple subdivisions, with the following number of farmers benefitting: Jirania (630), Mohanpur (564), Belbari (535), Old Agartala (630), Lefunga (530), Dukli (510), Mandai (539), Hezamara (587), and Bamutia (648).
Soil testing is a crucial first step in determining nutrient deficiencies and selecting appropriate crops, helping farmers increase yield while reducing input costs. The department stated that the results of the tests will assist farmers in adopting better farming practices tailored to the specific needs of their land.
With a growing focus on sustainable and result-driven agriculture, the administration plans to expand the programme further in the coming months. Officials believe such initiatives can pave the way for a more resilient and profitable farming community in Tripura.
