Tripura Hosts Training and Input Distribution Programme to Boost Tropical Orchid Cultivation
Tripura, 07 April 2025: To promote and expand tropical orchid cultivation in Tripura, a one-day training and planting material distribution programme was held today at Pragya Bhavan. The event was organized by ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids (ICAR-NRCO), Sikkim, in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region and the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Government of Tripura.
The programme was inaugurated by Cooperation Minister Sukla Charan Noatia, who highlighted the income-generating potential of orchid cultivation and its growing significance in both domestic and international markets. Farmers, grower groups, farmer clubs, and self-help groups from across Tripura enthusiastically participated in the event.

A total of 12,000 high-quality planting materials of the Dendrobium orchid variety along with coco blocks worth Rs. 35 lakh were distributed during the programme. The materials were provided under the NEH component of ICAR-IIWBR, Haryana. MLA Jitendra Majumder, Dr. Yogendra Singh (PS & Nodal Officer, NEH, ICAR-IIWBR), Apurba Roy (Secretary, Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare), Dr. P.B. Jamatia (Director, Agriculture), and Deepak Das (Director, Horticulture & Soil Conservation) were present at the programme. Dr. S.P. Das, Director of ICAR-NRCO, delivered the welcome address and shared insights into proper management practices for cultivating Dendrobium orchids and the centre’s achievements.
ICAR-NRCO scientists from Sikkim conducted technical sessions, equipping participants with practical knowledge on tropical orchid farming. A total of 30 farmers from different districts of Tripura took part in this capacity-building initiative.
