SHABD | Bangkok | April 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, paid a spiritual visit to Wat Pho todayone of Thailand’s most revered Buddhist temples located in the heart of Bangkok. The visit forms part of PM Modi’s ongoing diplomatic and cultural engagement during his trip to Thailand. Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is globally renowned for its colossal 46-meter-long reclining Buddha statue, making it one of the largest and most iconic representations of the Buddha in the world. The temple complex, sprawling over 20 acres, houses more than 1,000 Buddha images and holds immense religious and historical significance in Thai culture. During the visit, PM Modi offered prayers and sought blessings, standing before the serene Reclining Buddha statue.
Thai PM Shinawatra joined him in the spiritual ceremony, emphasizing the shared cultural and religious ties between India and Thailand. Built in the 16th century, Wat Pho is not only a sacred pilgrimage site but also a center for traditional Thai medicine and education. It stands as one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok, second only to the Grand Palace in popularity. The Reclining Buddha, which measures 46 meters in length and 15 meters in height, is surrounded by 108 bronze bowls symbolizing the auspicious qualities of the Buddha. Visitors traditionally drop coins into these bowls for good luck and to support temple maintenance.
As Buddhist monks chanted sacred verses, Prime Minister Modi received their blessings and reiterated the universal message of peace taught by Lord Buddha. He highlighted the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam “the world is one family” as a timeless teaching that continues to guide global harmony. The visit served as a powerful reminder of the deep-rooted spiritual and cultural connections between India and Thailand, united by centuries of shared Buddhist heritage.
