Organ Donation and Transplantation to Succeed in Tripura Due to CM’s Efforts
Tripura 30 Jan, 2025: A new chapter in Tripura’s healthcare sector is set to begin as organ transplantation, including liver transplants, will soon be conducted at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital. Chennai-based Mohan Foundation will collaborate with GBP Hospital to facilitate these transplants, enhancing the state’s healthcare services.
Medical Superintendent of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, announced this at a press conference today. He stated that Mohan Foundation, a Multi-Organ Harvesting and Networking organization, will work to improve organ transplantation services in Tripura. This foundation has a reputed presence both in India and internationally.
Yesterday, a stakeholder workshop was organized under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, where he sought everyone’s cooperation in making organ donation and transplantation successful in the state.
Dr. Shankar Chakraborty highlighted that organ transplantation has been practiced in India for a long time. So far, two successful kidney transplants have been conducted in Tripura one on July 8 and another on November 11 last year. To further improve organ donation and transplantation, the state is now partnering with Mohan Foundation.
Discussing the importance of organ donation, Dr. Shankar Chakraborty pointed out that road accidents are a major cause of fatalities. GBP Hospital’s Trauma Center recorded 98 deaths in 2023 and 111 deaths in 2024, with a significant number involving brain death cases. He emphasized that organs from brain-dead patients could save other lives, provided both donor and recipient families give consent.
He also mentioned that just like blood donation, body donation and organ transplantation should gain public support. After brain death, some organs, including the heart, remain functional and can be transplanted. However, legal clearances and family motivation are essential for this process.
AIIMS Neurosurgery Professor (Dr.) Deepak Gupta, who attended the press conference, explained that a Brain Death Committee must be formed, and a certification must be issued by four doctors before organ donation can proceed. If a brain-dead patient’s heartbeat continues, their heart can be donated.
Mohan Foundation’s Executive Director, Pallavi Kumar, stressed the need for proper infrastructure, trained professionals, and family motivation for successful organ transplantation. She also highlighted the crucial role of the media in spreading awareness. Additionally, she suggested that schools, colleges, and organizations like Lions Club and Rotary Club should take an active role in educating the youth about organ donation.
AGMC Principal Prof. (Dr.) Anup Kumar Saha emphasized the importance of organ donation and the need to raise awareness to ensure swift progress in transplantation services in Tripura. He thanked Mohan Foundation for its support in improving the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
The press conference was attended by AGMC Principal Prof. (Dr.) Anup Kumar Saha, AIIMS Neurosurgery Professor (Dr.) Deepak Gupta, Mohan Foundation’s Executive Director Pallavi Kumar, Deputy Medical Superintendent & General Administration Dr. Konak Chowdhury, Deputy Medical Superintendents Dr. Monirul Islam, Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, Deputy Director of Administration Gideon Malsom, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Bikash Debbarma, and other officials.
