Tripura,Jan 28, 2025: Under the esteemed guidance of Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha, the Government of Tripura has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in promoting the use of Tripura’s rich regional languages in governance and enhancing digital accessibility for citizens.
The MoU was signed during a state-level workshop titled “Bhashinirajyam” held at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala. The event was inaugurated by the IT Minister of Tripura, Pranajit Singha Roy, in the presence of Kiran Gitte, Secretary of IT, Government of Tripura, Amitabh Nag, CEO of DIBD, MeitY, and JeyaRagulGeshan B., Director of IT, Tripura.
Bhashini, a revolutionary initiative under the Digital India program, aims to ensure seamless communication and internet accessibility for all citizens in 22 Indian languages. Leveraging voice as a medium, Bhashini seeks to bridge both digital and literacy gaps.
The workshop outlined Bhashini’s vision for digital inclusivity, showcasing its software capabilities like real-time translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and voice-to-voice translation between Indian regional languages and English. The event also emphasized the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) for highly accurate translations and highlighted the roles and responsibilities of the state and DIBD in the mission.
Strategies to promote regional languages on digital platforms and software applications to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusivity for Tripura’s diverse linguistic communities were also discussed.
Currently, many citizens in Tripura face challenges due to language barriers, especially in rural and tribal areas where people struggle with software systems in English or Hindi. Bhashini can integrate with existing systems like the CM Helpline, e-Vidhan, Kisan Support App, and e-District to enable multilingual communication. It can also improve local governance through apps like Amar Sarkar, enhance education via multilingual technology, support the CCTNS platform by translating FIRs, and enable voice-based data entry. Additionally, Bhashini will facilitate internet access in regional and local languages, thereby reducing the digital divide in Tripura.
Tripura proudly stands as the first northeastern state, the first in eastern India, and the eighth in the country to sign an MoU with Bhashini. This pioneering step underscores Tripura’s commitment to leveraging technology for digital inclusivity and enhanced citizen-centric governance.
By integrating Bhashini with Tripura’s e-governance software, the initiative will bridge the digital divide, provide cost-effective translations, promote inclusive policy implementation, and enhance regional identity. Supported by MeitY’s Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD), the MoU represents a significant step toward seamless integration of Bhashini with Tripura’s governance systems. This initiative empowers citizens by eliminating language barriers and enabling multilingual access to essential services.
The implementation of Bhashini will further unify Tripura’s linguistic diversity, creating a more inclusive and connected society.
