First Successful Artificial Conception through Intrauterine Insemination at GBP Hospital
Agartala 18 Jan, 2025: In a milestone for infertility treatment in Northeast India, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital has achieved a significant breakthrough. Following Guwahati Medical College, AGMC is the second state medical institution in the region to successfully perform an intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure resulting in pregnancy.
A 32-year-old woman from Tripura, struggling with infertility for 14 years, sought treatment at AGMC’s gynecology and obstetrics department in 2023 under the guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Abhijit Shil. Upon evaluation, Dr. Shil discovered that the woman had fallopian tube blockages. A hysteroscopic tubal cannulation surgery was performed on October 5, 2023, by Dr. Shil, along with Associate Professor Dr. Salil Bindu Chakraborty and Assistant Professor Dr. Suparna Sutradhar.
Following surgery, Dr. Shil recommended advanced infertility treatment. On April 8, 2024, the IUI procedure was performed, wherein the husband’s sperm was artificially inseminated into the woman’s uterus using advanced medical techniques. The procedure was successful, and the woman conceived.
IUI is an assisted reproductive technology wherein sperm is directly introduced into the uterus to increase the chances of conception. This marks the first successful case of its kind in the state.
The woman continued her antenatal care at AGMC’s gynecology and obstetrics department. On January 9, 2025, she gave birth to a healthy baby weighing 3 kg via cesarean section. Both the mother and baby are in good health.
This achievement highlights the efforts of the AGMC gynecology and obstetrics department, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Jayanta Roy and Professor Dr. Jahar Lal Baidya, who initiated IUI-based infertility treatments two years ago.
The woman’s family expressed their gratitude to the team of doctors and healthcare workers for their dedication. The state health department’s acting director confirmed this success in a press release.
