Tripura 15 Jan, 2025: In South Ghilatali’s Palpara under Kalyanpur Police Station, the traditional Loot Kirtan festival, celebrated during Makar Sankranti and Poush Parbon, escalated into a violent clash. Once a symbol of unity and joy in rural Bengal, the event turned bloody this year as a dispute during the festival led to the use of sharp weapons, leaving eight individuals seriously injured.
The injured—identified as Mithun Sarkar (38), Bandhan Biswas (32), Biswajit Sarkar (38), Ranjit Sarkar (38), Sanjit Sarkar (38), Gopal Sarkar (47), Haribal Sarkar (55), and Parimal Sarkar (59)—were rushed to hospitals, with some transferred to GB Hospital in Agartala.
Following the clash, police forces were deployed overnight, and patrols continue in the area to maintain peace. According to Officer-in-Charge Tapas Malakar, investigations are underway, with cases filed by both parties involved, further intensifying the situation.
Traditionally, Loot Kirtan represents religious and social harmony, where villagers gather to share sweets and offerings. However, in recent years, personal and family disputes have marred its spirit, as seen in this year’s incident. The event has left the community in shock, raising concerns over future festival safety and the erosion of cultural values.
The administration has been urged to take strict measures to prevent such occurrences and ensure the safety of festivals that are integral to rural heritage and community unity.
