Tribute in the Legislative Assembly
Agartala 14 Jan, 2025: The Tripura Legislative Assembly yesterday observed a moment of silence and paid heartfelt tributes to former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury, renowned industrialist Ratan Tata, legendary tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, and iconic Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal on their demise.
Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Biswabandhu Sen, read out the condolence resolutions for all four eminent personalities, following which the members of the Assembly stood in silence for two minutes to honor their memory.

In his tribute, Speaker Biswabandhu Sen remarked that the passing of Sitaram Yechury is an irreparable loss to the political arena of the country. He was a visionary, compassionate, and skilled politician who carved a distinct identity in the political history of India through his idealistic struggles.
The Speaker further expressed deep grief over the demise of Ratan Tata, stating that the Assembly mourns the loss of the esteemed industrialist, philanthropist, and great humanitarian. Ratan Tata passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86 due to age-related ailments. His sudden demise marks not just the loss of a successful industrialist but also a great humanitarian who exemplified leadership, generosity, and humanity.
Paying homage to Ustad Zakir Hussain, the Speaker shared that the tabla maestro passed away on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73 in San Francisco, USA. He described Hussain’s career as a luminous chapter in the world of music, highlighting his unparalleled contribution to Hindustani classical music, jazz, and global music. Known as the “Emperor of Tabla,” his magical rhythm captivated audiences worldwide and elevated Indian music to international prominence.
Lastly, the Assembly mourned the demise of legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal, who passed away on December 23, 2024, at the age of 90 in Mumbai. Renowned for his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema, Benegal was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Padma Shri in 1976, Padma Bhushan in 1991, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He also won seven National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Hindi. The Assembly paid profound respects to Benegal and extended heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
