Agartala 29 November, 2024: The current state government is committed to the welfare of the media fraternity, stated Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha at the inauguration of a four-day Media Skill Development Workshop at the Agartala Press Club this evening. The chief minister also laid the foundation stone for a lift to be installed at the press club.
Speaking at the event, CM Saha assured that the government remains media-friendly and sincerely addresses the issues faced by media professionals. He emphasized that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated under any circumstances. “The government is proactive in resolving media-related concerns, including the long-pending demand for a lift at the Agartala Press Club,” he remarked.
Highlighting the transformation of the media landscape over the years, the chief minister observed that local readers and viewers are now more inclined towards regional media instead of depending on outside sources. While acknowledging the competitive environment among media outlets, he stressed that fake news is unacceptable. He expressed hope that the workshop would address various challenges faced by the industry, especially in the era of rapidly evolving technology.
“Media: The Fourth Pillar of Democracy”
PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, speaking on the occasion, reiterated the vital role of media in a democracy and appreciated the contribution of the local press in shaping society. National Press Club of India President Goutam Lahiri also lauded the organizers, noting the challenges faced by conventional media amidst the expanding scope of digital platforms. Lahiri remarked on Agartala’s visible development, appreciating the city’s transformation since his last visit.
The president of the Agartala Press Club expressed gratitude to the state government for initiating the installation of the lift, calling it a joyous day for media professionals. ICA Secretary Dr. P.K. Chakraborty, in his welcome speech, highlighted the global changes in journalism and the need for local journalists to adapt to the evolving trends. He also announced that Rs. 78 lakh has been allocated for the installation of the lift.
The workshop aims to equip media professionals with the skills required to navigate the challenges of modern journalism. Notable attendees included ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharya, Agartala Press Club Secretary Ramakanta De, and several prominent journalists. The chief minister concluded the program by handing over mementos to renowned journalist Goutam Lahiri.
