Khowai 16 November, 2024: A devastating road accident in Khowai on Friday night claimed the life of a motorcyclist while leaving his wife and daughter critically injured. The incident occurred at around 10:45 PM near the Mahadevtilla Tri-junction on the National Highway.
According to reports, Ranjit Deb (40), a resident of Singichhara, was returning home from a religious gathering at Mahadevtilla on his motorbike along with his wife, Soma Deb (32), and daughter, Debashree Deb (13). As they reached the Mahadevtilla Tri-junction, a Bolero truck, allegedly carrying illegal timber, sped recklessly from Kalyanpur and collided head-on with their motorbike. The truck violated traffic rules by taking a shortcut and crushed the bike before fleeing the scene.
The collision was fatal for Ranjit Deb, who died instantly at the site. His motorbike was shattered into two pieces. Soma Deb suffered severe head injuries, while Debashree sustained critical injuries below her waist, with fears of multiple fractures.
Emergency responders from Khowai transported the deceased’s body to the district hospital morgue. The injured mother and daughter were rushed to the GB Hospital in Agartala, where they are reportedly in critical condition.
In response to the accident, outraged locals staged a road blockade at the accident site, demanding the immediate arrest of the truck driver and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent such incidents. They also called for action against the illegal transportation of timber, which they claim is rampant in the area.
