Tripura 13 November, 2024: In a significant bust, the Churaibari police detained a man carrying a substantial amount of cannabis on a passenger bus traveling from Dharmanagar to Karimganj. The incident took place around 12 p.m. on Wednesday, when officers at Churaibari’s checkpoint stopped an ASTC passenger bus for routine inspection.
Upon searching the passengers, police found 5.7 kg of dried cannabis hidden on a youth from Bihar. The confiscated cannabis has an estimated black-market value of around 60,000 rupees.
The arrested man has been identified as Munna Sharma, aged 30, son of Ram Singh Sharma, a resident of Vaishali district in Bihar. According to police sources, Sharma admitted to transporting the cannabis, revealing that this was his second attempt to smuggle the substance from Tripura to Bihar. He stated that he had purchased the cannabis in Agartala’s Khejur Bagan area at a rate of 4,500 rupees per kg, intending to sell it in Bihar for 10,000 rupees per kg.
Sharma disclosed that his first attempt was successful, but he was apprehended by Churaibari police on his second try. Officer-in-Charge Khokon Saha stated that the accused has been booked under NDPS Act sections 47/24 and 22(B)(ii)(B)/29, and will be presented before the Dharmanagar court with a remand request. Police are hopeful that further interrogation will lead to more information on the smuggling network.
