Agartala, 19th October 2024: In a press conference held today, the Amra Bangali party expressed deep concerns over the recent Supreme Court verdict that upheld Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, which denies citizenship to Bengali refugees who arrived in Assam after March 25, 1971. The party strongly criticized the ruling, stating that it endangers the future of Bengalis across Assam, Tripura, and the entire Northeast.
During the conference, Amra Bangali leaders voiced their frustration over the ruling and the silence of major national political parties. They highlighted the historical injustice faced by the Bengali community and called for immediate action to protect their rights.
Key Demands Presented by Amra Bangali:
1. Implementation of National Promise: The party called for the fulfillment of the promise made during Partition, ensuring that Bengali refugees crossing the border would be welcomed, similar to how Punjabi refugees were treated after Partition.
2. Formation of a Bengali Regiment: To ensure the security and dignity of Bengalis, the party demanded the establishment of a dedicated Bengali regiment within the armed forces.
3. Creation of Socio-Economic Zones: The party urged the government to create socio-economic zones in Bengali-majority areas of Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal under Article 3 of the Constitution. This would ensure that Bengalis enjoy constitutional rights and protection as the original inhabitants of undivided India.
Amra Bangali leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fighting for the rights of the Bengali community, urging the central government to take immediate and decisive action to address the growing concerns over citizenship and safeguard the future of Bengalis across the region.
