Agartala, Oct 14, 2024: The ‘Mayer Gomon-2024’ program, organized by the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, was inaugurated today in front of Maharani Tulsivati Girls’ High School by Tripura’s Chief Minister, Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the growing unity and harmony among the state’s tribal and non-tribal communities, especially during the Durga Puja festival. He emphasized that the state government is committed to building a “Shrestha Tripura” (Better Tripura) by fostering these bonds of communal harmony.
The Chief Minister also reminisced about the royal era when a grand procession would mark the immersion of Durga idols from the same location. He noted that this year’s decision to hold the ‘Mayer Gomon’ event at the front of the school was made to preserve this tradition. Several clubs from the city were invited to participate in the event, and meticulous arrangements were put in place to ensure smooth execution.
Chief Minister Saha further commended the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) for transforming the Dashamighat into a state-of-the-art facility, which has made the idol immersions orderly and seamless. He extended his thanks to the Mayor and all AMC staff for their efforts.
Mayor of Agartala, Dipak Majumdar, mentioned that over the past two years, the ‘Mayer Gomon’ program has garnered widespread enthusiasm among the city’s residents. He added that the festival is being celebrated without any untoward incidents, thanks to the state government’s proactive efforts.
In his welcome address, Dr. Pradip Kumar Chakraborty, Secretary of the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, noted that the ‘Mayer Gomon’ program first began in 2022. This year, 45 clubs from across Agartala have confirmed their participation. Three of the participating clubs will be awarded for excellence in different categories, with prizes of ₹50,000, ₹30,000, and ₹20,000 for the first, second, and third positions, respectively. Additional prizes will also be awarded to clubs hosting the best Durga Puja celebrations at the district level.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, Sabhadhipati of the West Tripura Zilla Parishad Balai Goswami, District Magistrate of West Tripura Dr. Vishal Kumar, Director of Information and Cultural Affairs Bimbisar Bhattacharya, and DGP Amitabh Ranjan were among the prominent figures present at the inauguration ceremony.
