Churaibari, October 12, 2024: Despite the ongoing internet disruption in North Tripura, the Churaibari Police successfully intercepted a consignment of cannabis valued at Rs. 5 lakh on October 12, 2024 (Saturday). As the district police remained occupied with the Kadamtala incident and worked to ensure the smooth celebration of Durga Puja, drug traffickers continued their illicit activities.
The incident occurred around 11:45 AM, when police at the Churaibari checkpost, located along the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-8), stopped a 12-wheeler truck bearing the registration number AS01LC/5471 for inspection. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a hidden compartment inside the truck’s cabin containing 25 kilograms of dry cannabis packed in multiple bags.
The driver of the truck, identified as Rupam Debbarma, a resident of Mandai in Jirania, was arrested along with the vehicle. According to Churaibari Police Officer-in-Charge Khokan Saha, the black market value of the seized cannabis is estimated at around Rs. 5 lakh. The truck was reportedly transporting the cannabis from Ambassa to Guwahati.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and an investigation is underway. The accused will be presented before the District and Sessions Court in Dharmanagar on October 13, 2024 (Sunday).
