Agartala 21 Sep, 2024: Tripura’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment, Animesh Debbarma, emphasized the need for collective commitment to protecting nature and the environment. Speaking at the state-level model exhibition and competition organized by the Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB), the minister urged everyone to embrace traditional practices and sustainable lifestyles for better mental and physical health. The event, held at Pragna Bhavan, focused on the theme of “Affordable and Sustainable Lifestyles for a Green Tripura.”
Debbarma highlighted that the models presented by students from the state’s eight districts were low-cost solutions aimed at protecting the environment. These innovations, he said, could be further developed for industrial or commercial use. The event showcased 40 innovative models, which were praised by the minister for their potential to contribute to a greener Tripura.
He also reiterated the state government’s commitment to popularizing science and promoting sustainable practices. “We need to take steps to protect the resources nature provides. More forests must be created to prevent floods, and everyone should take initiatives to maintain a healthy environment at a low cost,” Minister Animesh Debbarma added.
In his speech, the minister applauded the students’ creativity and urged them to continue their innovative efforts to raise awareness and help society embrace environmentally friendly practices.
Dr. K. Shashikumar, Secretary of the Science, Technology, and Environment Department, elaborated on the theme during his welcome address. Other speakers included Mahendra Singh, Director of the Science and Technology Department, and N.C. Sharma, Director of the School Education Department.
The event awarded the top three schools—Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Higher Secondary School, Pitra Higher Secondary School, and Tulashikhar Rajnagar Higher Secondary School—for their outstanding models. The winners received prizes of ₹10,000, ₹7,000, and ₹5,000, along with trophies and certificates. Additionally, 12 students won prizes in the Hackathon competition, with each receiving ₹3,000, trophies, and certificates. Twenty winners of the on-the-spot quiz competition were also awarded trophies.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Bishu Karmakar, Member Secretary of the TSPCB, who noted the existence of 1,100 eco-clubs in Tripura working towards environmental conservation.
