Boxanagar Correspondent Anwar Hossain | January 30: Based on special intelligence, a large-scale anti-cannabis operation was conducted on Thursday from 8:30 AM under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalamchaura Police Station, Naru Gopal Deb. The operation was attended by SI Bishwajit Debbarma, SI Supritam Dey, 40 TSR personnel from the 9th Battalion, 20 BSF personnel from the 49th Battalion, and two female constables.
The primary objective of the operation was to completely eradicate illegal cannabis cultivation in areas under Kalamchaura Police Station, including South Kalamchaura, Hartakiyamura, Haser Dang, and Baidar Dung. These areas had long been under surveillance due to reports of illegal cannabis farming. The operation covered approximately 30 acres of forested hill land, where nearly 40,000 cannabis plants were destroyed.
The cannabis plants were secretly cultivated in three separate plots deep within the forests of South Kalamchaura to evade law enforcement detection. The forested area near Prabir Roy’s pig farm was also included in the operation. Although some local residents attempted to obstruct the mission, the authorities took firm action and successfully destroyed the illegal plantations.
During the raid, it was observed that the cannabis plants had already started yielding and were close to being harvested. The crackdown caused significant financial losses to the cultivators, leading many women farmers to break down in tears, pleading with authorities to spare the plants. However, as part of the state government’s mission to build a “Drug-Free Tripura,” the administration remained resolute in its efforts, leaving no cannabis field untouched.
