Khowai 05 November 2024, Tripura: In a harrowing incident from Khowai district, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted on August 18, 2024. The accused, identified as 36-year-old Suren Tanti, reportedly threatened the girl’s family, warning them not to report the incident to the authorities, even threatening violence if they approached the police. The family claims that the accused has ties to a local Indigenous political group, which further intimidated them.
After the incident was reported, police at Champahor station registered a case under case number 17/2024, applying sections 65(1) and 351(3) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Investigating Officer Sushmita Kapali is leading the case, and authorities confirmed that the accused was taken into custody late last night.
Today, both the victim and the accused were brought to Khowai District Hospital for medical examinations under police supervision. Officer Kapali confirmed that the accused would be presented in court tomorrow. The case has raised serious concerns about safety and support for vulnerable communities in remote areas.
