Agartala, Tripura 26 May 2024: The Bay of Bengal-originated Cyclone Remal is expected to make landfall late Sunday night, potentially impacting Tripura. The state government has made extensive preparations to handle the situation. Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey, along with other officials, provided detailed information in a press conference on Sunday.
Brijesh Pandey stated that a meeting was held with various departmental officials in the presence of the Chief Secretary, during which several important decisions were made. All educational institutions and Anganwadi centers in the state will remain closed on May 27 and 28. District magistrates have been instructed to stockpile essential food items, and three teams from the NDRF will be deployed in different districts.
The Power Department has been directed to take necessary measures in advance to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. The Forest Department, Fire Brigade, and Public Works Department will work together.
Meteorologist Partha Roy from Agartala Airport’s Meteorological Department stated that Cyclone Remal is likely to strike Bangladesh and West Bengal, impacting southern, Gomati, Sepahijala, Dhalai, Khowai, and western districts of Tripura with thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 60 km/h on Sunday night. Red alerts have been issued in Gomati and Sepahijala districts.
Additionally, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in North Tripura and Unakoti districts. On Monday, rain is expected in all districts, with heavy rainfall likely in Gomati and Sepahijala. Winds of 50 to 60 km/h are anticipated in these two districts. On Tuesday, heavy rain may occur in North, Unakoti, and Dhalai districts, while light rain with thunderstorms may occur in other districts.
Authorities have requested cooperation from everyone to handle the situation. Disaster Management State Project Officer Sarat Das and other officials were also present at the press conference.
