Agartala 28 Dec: In a sorrowful turn of events, Kolkata witnessed the passing of the esteemed legislator Surajit Datta, who succumbed to illness after battling it for several days. The news of his demise sent shockwaves through the political landscape, as he breathed his last at a private hospital in the city yesterday night.
The late legislator’s mortal remains were transported to the state secretariat from the MBBS Airport early Thursday morning. At the secretariat, Governor Indrasena Reddy paid his respects to Surajit Datta, followed by heartfelt condolences from Tripura Assembly Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen, government Chief Secretary Kalyani Ray, and other dignitaries from the state legislature and executive branches.
From the airport, the procession proceeded to the state secretariat, where Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, along with various state ministers including Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Finance Minister Pronjit Singh Ray, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Ray, and Welfare Minister Sudhanshu Das, among others, paid homage to the departed legislator with floral tributes.
MLA Surajit Datta had been ailing due to kidney-related complications in recent days. On Thursday morning, a twelve-vehicle funeral cortege carried his body to Agartala Airport, where a sea of mourners gathered to bid a tearful farewell. Notably present were leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other political entities.
Subsequently, a motorcycle rally escorted the mortal remains to the legislative assembly building, where a final homage was paid. The body was then taken to the party headquarters in Krishna Nagar, Ramnagar, and finally to the Bot-tala crematorium for the last rites, observed with full national honors. The entire state joined hands to express their grief, remembering MLA Surajit Datta as a beloved leader whose legacy will endure in the hearts of the people.
