Agartala, October 4, 2026: Tension has escalated at Agartala’s GBP Hospital following a dispute between a patient from Kalyanpur and a doctor on September 29, with resident doctors warning of a work boycott from tomorrow.
According to reports, an argument broke out at the hospital’s Medicine Ward when the patient came for treatment. The patient later posted allegations against the doctor on social media and reportedly uploaded a video recording of the doctor. The video subsequently went viral.
Resident and intern doctors at GBP Hospital raised objections to what they described as objectionable and defamatory content targeting doctors. On October 1, a written complaint was submitted at New Capital Complex Police Station by intern doctors.
Following the complaint, resident doctors launched a protest and placed a five-point charter of demands, including the arrest of the concerned patient. The protesting doctors also alleged that police had not given adequate attention to their complaint.
The doctors have now warned that they will go on a work boycott from tomorrow, raising concerns over the impact on healthcare services at the hospital.
Meanwhile, New Capital Complex Police Station Officer-in-Charge Paritosh Das addressed the media and provided details of the case and the police investigation.
According to the police, a complaint was received regarding allegedly defamatory statements uploaded on social media against a doctor. As the matter was considered non-cognizable in nature, police approached the court and obtained permission to register a case.
Police said NCCPS Case No. 80/2026 has been registered under Section 356(2) and 3/5 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is currently underway, and a notice has been issued to the accused.
The OC said police will also examine the concerned patient in connection with the investigation. As the patient is from the Kalyanpur Police Station area, police have already communicated with him through Kalyanpur Police Station.
Addressing allegations that the Cyber Crime unit was not cooperating, the OC said Cyber Crime would take necessary action once relevant social media information is shared with them.
Police further clarified that they have not received any complaint against the doctor regarding the September 29 incident. The complaint currently being investigated was filed against the patient and those who uploaded the alleged defamatory content on social media, including several channels, according to the police.
The situation remains tense as the doctors’ proposed work boycott could affect medical services at GBP Hospital, while the police investigation continues.
