Agartala, September 13: What began as a return journey from the annual Kasba Kali temple fair ended in tragedy for 28-year-old Sujita Deb, who was allegedly stabbed to death during a confrontation in the Kamalasagar area on Saturday night.
Sujita was returning towards Nehal Chandra Nagar with her sister Pinki Deb after attending the fair when, according to relatives, the two women were stopped on the road by Sujita’s father-in-law Sanjit Nama and brother-in-law Nayan Nama.
The encounter reportedly led to a heated exchange. Sujita’s husband, Pritam Nama, and Pinki allegedly tried to intervene and calm the situation.
However, the confrontation reportedly escalated when Nayan allegedly attacked Sujita with a knife. She suffered multiple stab injuries and collapsed on the roadside.
Family members rushed her to Madhupur Hospital. She was later referred to TMC and subsequently to GB Pant Hospital for specialised treatment. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Relatives have linked the incident to tensions surrounding Sujita’s marriage to Pritam.
Pritam told the media that Sujita was his second wife. He said his first marriage had ended in separation before he married Sujita around three years ago. He claimed that members of his family did not accept the marriage and that the couple had consequently been living in rented accommodation away from his family home.
Pinki said she had been staying with Sujita since August 28. Recalling Saturday night’s incident, she said the sisters had attended the temple fair and were returning home when Sanjit and Nayan allegedly stopped them.
According to Pinki, the two men began confronting Sujita and arguing with Pritam. She said the situation grew increasingly tense before the alleged knife attack.
The circumstances of the confrontation, including what triggered the altercation and the precise sequence of events, are being examined.
Sujita’s mother and brother have called for stringent punishment against those allegedly responsible for her death.
