Tripura, 13 Sep 2026: Police have arrested one person in connection with the chain-snatching incident involving a 70-year-old retired teacher in Agartala’s Agrodut Para area on September 11.
Speaking about the case, East Agartala Police Station OC Krishnadhan Sarkar said the incident took place shortly before 5:45 AM when the woman, identified as Geeta Das, was out for a morning walk with another woman, Geeta Saha. Two helmeted men allegedly approached them on a green-coloured motorcycle, asked for directions and then forcibly snatched the gold chain from Geeta Das before fleeing.
Following the incident, police examined CCTV footage and activated their sources across different districts. One of the suspects, allegedly the motorcycle rider, was traced and detained from the Radhanagar–Bhati Abhoynagar area. Police subsequently recovered the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.
The OC said the second accused, who allegedly acted as the pillion rider and snatched the chain, was in another district. Police conducted a raid there but could not arrest him as his mobile phone was switched off. Police said efforts are underway to arrest him soon.
The stolen gold chain has not yet been recovered.
A case has been registered as Case No. 137/26 under Section 309(6)/3(5) of the BNS, and the investigation is being conducted by police.
OC Sarkar also indicated the possibility of a wider gang involvement, stating that local groups may be helping outsiders enter Agartala and commit such crimes.
Regarding recent thefts reported in the Jogendranagar area, police said they had received telephonic information about incidents at around three houses and had already deployed personnel to investigate.
The police officer assured city residents that there was no need to panic and said police were taking strong action to identify and arrest all members involved in such criminal activities.
