Tripura, 07 September 2026: An MBBS student from Tripura has alleged that she was harassed by an auto-rickshaw driver while returning home from the airport, prompting her to approach Battala Police Station and file a complaint.
The student, identified as Nisha Akter, said she is pursuing her MBBS at RIMS Imphal. According to her statement, she had reserved an auto-rickshaw from the airport to her home in Bishalgarh for ₹350.
However, she alleged that the driver picked up other passengers along the way despite the vehicle being reserved. Objecting to this, Nisha said she asked the driver to drop her at Battala instead.
According to her, after reaching Battala, the driver allegedly demanded ₹200 and refused to hand over her luggage unless she paid the amount. Nisha said she told him that the regular fare from the airport to Battala was around ₹30 and refused to pay ₹200.
She further alleged that the driver threatened to take away her luggage. The situation reportedly drew the attention of people nearby, following which she paid ₹100.
Nisha also alleged that when she took out her phone, the driver grabbed her hand in front of others and questioned why she was recording a video. She said the incident left her frightened and concerned about the safety of women travelling alone.
Following the incident, Nisha approached Battala Police Station, where a complaint was filed against the auto-rickshaw driver.
A representative accompanying the student said the incident raises concerns over the treatment of passengers travelling from the airport and urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
Police action and the exact sections of the case, if any, are awaited.
