Tripura, 20 August 2026: At least 11 people were injured after a clash broke out during a quarter-final match of the Harilal Deb Memorial Football Tournament at Miapara School ground in Bishalgarh today. Five of the injured are reportedly in serious condition and undergoing treatment at Hapania Hospital.
The clash took place during the quarter-final match between Miapara Play Centre and Matinagar Play Centre. According to the complaint, an argument broke out between two players over an issue during the match and was later settled. However, a youth from Miapara allegedly entered the field and assaulted a Matinagar player.
The situation reportedly escalated when several people from the Miapara area allegedly entered the field carrying sharp weapons, bamboo sticks and lathis and attacked Matinagar players and spectators. Tournament committee office-bearer Dulal Mia is also alleged to have joined the assault.
The five seriously injured persons were identified as Shafiqul Islam, Akash Mia, Masud, Shakib and Safayet. Six others—Ruhel Mia, Dulal Mia, Jutan Bhuiya, Ramzan Mia, Ariful Islam and Liton Bhuiya—were also injured.
Police from Madhupur police station reportedly reached the spot and attempted to control the situation. The Matinagar players and supporters later took shelter at the police station.
A case was subsequently filed against 11 people, including tournament committee members and residents of Miapara. The incident has created tension in the area, while local sports enthusiasts have demanded strict action against those responsible.
