Agartala, July 30: A tragic incident has been reported from the Sidhai Mohanpur area of West Tripura district, where a one-year-old girl, Eliza Debbarma, died after allegedly ingesting a toxic snail.
According to family members, the incident occurred around 12:00 pm on Wednesday while the child’s father was away at work. The girl’s mother was reportedly occupied with bathing and preparing food when the toddler is believed to have picked up a snail from the wall or floor and swallowed it.
The child’s condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting her family to rush her to a nearby health facility. Due to the severity of her condition, doctors referred her to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala, where she was declared dead despite emergency medical treatment.
Speaking to the media, the grieving father said he rushed home after receiving an urgent phone call from his wife and immediately took his daughter for medical care. He expressed shock over how quickly her health worsened and said the family never imagined such a tragedy could occur.
Hospital authorities and police have registered the case. Medical officials have initiated the necessary procedures, including a post-mortem examination, to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are awaiting the official forensic and medical reports to confirm whether toxicity from the snail directly led to the child’s death.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the locality, with residents expressing condolences to the bereaved family. The investigation is ongoing.
