Agartala, July 21, 2026: Tripura Police Director General (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was accorded a solemn farewell with full state honours on Tuesday, a day after his untimely death under mysterious circumstances. Senior police officials, government representatives and colleagues gathered to pay their last respects during a ceremonial guard of honour at the Police Headquarters in Agartala.
The tribute began at the late DGP’s official residence, where family members, colleagues and officials offered floral tributes. His mortal remains were then taken to the Police Headquarters, where a formal ceremonial salute and guard of honour were presented in recognition of his distinguished service to the state and the nation.
Following the police tribute, the coffin was taken to the Tripura Civil Secretariat, where Governor, Chief Minister, members of the Council of Ministers, legislators, senior bureaucrats and top police officers paid their final respects. The ceremony reflected the state’s gratitude for Dhankar’s contributions to maintaining law and order during his tenure as the state’s highest-ranking police officer.
After the state ceremonies concluded, his mortal remains were flown to Delhi. His final rites are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 22, at 9:00 a.m. at his ancestral residence on Gandhi Road in Baraut, Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh.
Anurag Dhankar was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Monday inside the bathroom of his office at the Tripura Police Headquarters. The incident has been registered as an unnatural death case, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
So far, the Tripura government has not disclosed any details regarding the progress of the investigation. The preliminary post-mortem report has also not been made public, leaving several questions unanswered. Authorities have stated that the inquiry is continuing and further information will be shared as the investigation progresses.
As a mark of respect, the Tripura government declared one day of state mourning on Tuesday. The National Flag was flown at half-mast across the state, and all official government functions scheduled for the day were cancelled or postponed.
The passing of DGP Anurag Dhankar has deeply saddened the police fraternity and the people of Tripura. His final farewell, marked by full state honours, reflected the respect and recognition he earned during his years of dedicated public service.
