Teliamura, June 13: Two young men lost their lives and another sustained serious injuries after a massive soil embankment collapsed on them while they were collecting earth for house construction work at Konjamura Muslim Basti under Chakmaghat in the Krishnapur Assembly Constituency on Saturday morning.
According to reports, 20-year-old James Jamatia, 30-year-old Asha Hari Jamatia, and 30-year-old Amulya Dhan Jamatia, all residents of Konjamura, had gone to the area with a vehicle to collect soil for construction purposes. While cutting earth, a huge mound of soil suddenly caved in, burying all three men underneath.
Witnessing the incident, local residents rushed to the spot and immediately began rescue operations without waiting for administrative assistance. Their prompt efforts helped rescue Amulya Dhan Jamatia, the driver of the vehicle, who suffered severe injuries to his leg. He was initially taken to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital and later referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala after his condition deteriorated.
Following the incident, personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, TSR, and the disaster management team reached the site and carried out intensive rescue operations. Fire service personnel and TSR jawans reportedly worked tirelessly to recover the victims from beneath the collapsed soil.
However, allegations have surfaced that the sub-divisional disaster management team arrived at the scene nearly an hour after the incident and played a limited role in the rescue operation, drawing criticism from local residents.
Meanwhile, DCM Genius Debbarma visited the hospital and met the bereaved family members. Teliamura Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty also rushed to the hospital after receiving news of the tragedy.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the region, raising concerns over safety measures during soil excavation activities and the response time of emergency disaster management services. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the fatal accident.
