Kailashahar, June 12: A Bangladeshi national was killed in firing by the Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday evening along the India-Bangladesh border at Latiapura under Irani Police Station in Tripura’s Kailashahar subdivision.
According to BSF sources, the incident occurred near Border Pillar No. 1852/14-S in the Latiapura Border Outpost (BOP) area. Between 5:45 PM and 6:15 PM, a group of around 10 to 12 Bangladeshi smugglers allegedly attempted to cross the international border carrying Burmese cigarettes.
BSF personnel on duty reportedly issued repeated warnings and ordered the group to stop. When the smugglers allegedly ignored the warnings and continued advancing, BSF personnel fired two rounds from an INSAS rifle. One Bangladeshi national sustained gunshot injuries and died on the spot.
The deceased has been identified as Majid Ali (30), son of Ajib Ali, a resident of Nishchintapur village under Kulaura Police Station in Moulvibazar district of Bangladesh.
Security has been tightened in the border area following the incident. No immediate reaction was reported from the Bangladesh border authorities.
Meanwhile, Emergency Medical Officer Dr. Nirmal Debbarma of Kailashahar stated that at around 9:45 PM, BSF and police personnel brought the body to the hospital along with an official requisition. According to the requisition, the deceased was killed in BSF firing during an alleged smuggling attempt.
“The body has been sent to the morgue, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted tomorrow. Further details will emerge after the autopsy,” Dr. Debbarma said.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
