What was once seen as a simple gift of nature is now emerging as a strong symbol of development across Tripura. Under the Prime Minister’s *Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana*, the state has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey. Solar power generation in Tripura has crossed the 6-megawatt mark, a historic achievement for the state.
According to Biswajit Basu, Managing Director of the state power utility, there is strong optimism that Tripura will surpass the 10-megawatt solar power target by March next year. This progress reflects the growing acceptance and success of rooftop solar installations across the state.
The response to the scheme has been unprecedented. So far, 17,131 electricity consumers have registered under the project. Among them, solar panels have already been installed on the rooftops of 1,762 households. These rooftops are no longer just concrete structures—they have transformed into small power-generating units, collectively producing 6 megawatts of electricity every day.
Once, sunset meant the fear of darkness. Today, the same sun is ensuring reliable electricity for homes across Tripura. Beyond lighting homes, the project is also creating new income opportunities. One of its most significant aspects is that consumers are not only meeting their own power needs but are also selling surplus electricity back to the state power corporation, earning direct financial benefits.
So far, 187 consumers have sold excess solar power and earned a total of ₹53,514. This amount has been directly credited to their bank accounts. As a result, solar energy in Tripura is no longer just an environmentally friendly initiative—it has become a practical support system for household economies.
From villages to urban areas, rooftops glittering with solar panels are telling a new story—one of development, self-reliance, and responsibility towards future generations. By reducing electricity bills to near zero, the project is also teaching people how to grow while living in harmony with natural resources.
Through the Prime Minister’s *Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana*, Tripura has demonstrated that the light of development is not limited to electric poles and wires. It shines in people’s minds, inspiring dreams of a self-reliant, green, and sustainable future. As the state’s skies glow brighter with solar energy, the path ahead for Tripura is becoming equally radiant.
