Agartala: Dec 25. In a major counter-insurgency breakthrough, North Tripura district police have arrested another active member of the banned militant outfit TUNF, this time from neighboring Mizoram. The operation was led by Officer-in-Charge Rinpuia Darlong of Vangmun Police Station, reinforcing the district police’s recent string of successes against the outfit.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team from Vangmun police station conducted a targeted operation in Mizoram on Wednesday and apprehended TUNF cadre Lalthanga Riang. According to police sources, the arrested militant is a resident of Bhandarima area under Anandabazar police station in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura district and is the son of Harimanohan Riang. He is believed to be an active member of the proscribed organization.
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under Vangmun Police Station Case No. 2025VGM007, invoking sections 61(2)(a), 148, and 310(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
For security reasons, the arrested militant was shifted from Vangmun police station to Kanchanpur police station on Wednesday night. He was subsequently produced before the Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday.
This arrest follows the recent detention of another TUNF member from Damdum area under Dharmanagar subdivision, indicating intensified police action against the militant network. The latest development has created a stir in the region, with local residents expressing satisfaction over the police’s proactive role in maintaining security.
Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ashish Kumar Thakur is expected to provide further details on the operation.
