Tripura, 19 Dec 2025: A district-wide Plastic-Free Unakoti Campaign was launched on Thursday with the objective of transforming Unakoti into a clean and environmentally sustainable district. The campaign was formally inaugurated at Gournagar Bazaar by the Chairman of Unakoti Zilla Parishad, Amalendu Das.
Speaking at the programme, Das emphasized that cleanliness should begin from individual households and extend to public spaces such as roads, markets and surrounding areas. He called for a change in public mindset, urging people to stop indiscriminate dumping of waste. He said that through collective efforts, Unakoti can be developed as a plastic-free and pollution-free district, and appealed for active cooperation from all sections of society.
Addressing the gathering, Unakoti District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Mazumdar said that to ensure the success of the campaign, dustbins have been installed across all panchayats, ADC villages and urban local bodies. Nearly 50,000 dustbins have been placed at government institutions and public places. Waste segregation centres have been made operational at the panchayat and ADC village levels, along with arrangements for sanitation workers and vehicles for waste collection and transportation.
The District Magistrate further informed that plastic waste management has already been implemented in Kumarghat block, while from Thursday onwards the same system has been made operational in Pecharthal block. These initiatives aim to strengthen systematic waste disposal and environmental protection across the district.
The programme was also addressed by Gournagar Panchayat Samiti Vice Chairman Md. Badarzzaman and Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Project Mission Officer Kunal Das. Other officials present included DWS&S official Manoranjan Debbarma and Gournagar Block BDO Nabarun Chakraborty, among others.
Meanwhile, a Plastic Waste Management Unit was inaugurated at Pecharthal block by Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Project Mission Officer Kunal Das. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Pecharthal BD Panchayat Samiti Chairman Sajal Chakma and District Magistrate Dr. Omol Mazumdar. The unit has been constructed at a cost of ₹15.12 lakh and is expected to play a key role in strengthening plastic waste management in the area.
The district administration reiterated its commitment to sustaining cleanliness drives and ensuring active public participation to make Unakoti a model district in environmental management.
