Tripura, 06 Dec 2025: The College of Fisheries, Central Agricultural University (Imphal), has wrapped up a five-day training programme focused on improving the safe and hygienic production of Sheedal, a popular traditional fermented fish product in Tripura. Held from December 1 to 5, 2025, the programme was conducted under the DBT-NER Advance Level Institutional Biotech Hub (Phase II) Project.
Seventeen participants from Hezamara, Lefunga, and Bamutia Blocks of West Tripura, nominated through the Superintendent of Fisheries, Mohanpur, took part in the training. The initiative aimed to enhance scientific understanding and practical skills in modern, hygienic processing methods, enabling participants to explore entrepreneurship in Sheedal production.
Throughout the programme, trainees learned improved techniques for fermentation, handling, cleanliness, and sanitation—key factors in ensuring the safety and quality of the product. The training combined demonstrations, hands-on practice, and expert interactions.
The valedictory event on December 5 featured addresses by project coordinators and the Dean of the College, Prof. Arun Bhai Patel, who encouraged participants to utilize their training to develop small-scale, hygienic Sheedal units that could support local livelihoods. Certificates were later distributed to all participants.
The programme highlighted the institution’s continued commitment to capacity building and promoting value-added fish-based enterprises in Tripura.
