SHABD, New Delhi | December 5: During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted him a curated selection of items reflecting India’s rich cultural heritage, craftsmanship and traditional excellence. Each gift was chosen to highlight India’s artistic diversity and long-standing ties with Russia.
One of the key gifts was Assam Black Tea, grown in the fertile plains of the Brahmaputra Valley. Known for its strong malty flavour and distinct aroma, this tea has earned a GI tag and represents India’s globally celebrated tea culture.

Modi also presented a beautifully crafted Murshidabad Silver Tea Set, showcasing fine engraving techniques from West Bengal. The piece reflects India’s artisanal legacy and the cultural significance of tea in both India and Russia.
Another symbolic gift was a handcrafted silver horse from Maharashtra, intricately detailed and representing strength, honour and the enduring partnership between the two nations.
Among the artistic items was an exquisite marble chess set from Agra, featuring traditional stone inlay work. The set highlights India’s craftsmanship while also appealing to the strategic and cultural importance of the game.
The Prime Minister further gifted Kashmiri saffron, renowned as ‘Red Gold’ for its colour, aroma and flavour. GI and ODOP certified, this saffron represents the hard work of Kashmiri farmers and India’s agricultural heritage.
The most meaningful gift in the collection was a Russian translation of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, the timeless scripture from the Mahabharata. The text, centred on duty, righteousness and spiritual wisdom, serves as a cultural bridge for Russian readers to engage with Indian philosophy.
Through this thoughtful selection, India highlighted its artistic excellence while reaffirming the strong and historic friendship shared with Russia.
