SHABD | Kohima, December 5: Pongo village in Longleng district witnessed a vibrant start to its first Taro Festival, a two-day celebration designed to honour the cultural legacy and agricultural value of one of Nagaland’s most cherished root crops. Organised by the Department of Horticulture, the festival carries the theme “Rooted in Culture, a Journey of Heritage.”
The event drew significant attention with MLA A. Pongshi Phom gracing the opening ceremony. In his address, he highlighted Pongo’s long-standing reputation for producing exceptional Taro and underlined the crop’s growing relevance in both cultural identity and rural livelihood.
The MLA noted that festivals like this can open new opportunities for farmers and communities by creating better market visibility and encouraging innovation in agriculture. He urged young people to explore entrepreneurship responsibly, make full use of government support programmes, and contribute to local economic growth.
Phom also outlined several initiatives aimed at strengthening Taro cultivation and farmer welfare, including improved storage and marketing facilities, support with essential tools, healthcare provisions, and training in scientific farming practices.
Adding to the day’s significance, a new horticulture marketing shed was inaugurated, signalling a push toward better infrastructure and organised market access for local producers.
The festival sets the stage for promoting Pongo’s agricultural strengths while celebrating the region’s cultural roots.
