Agartala, Dec 3: Major urban development projects worth nearly ₹100 crore are currently underway in the Agartala Purani Hawar area, covering smart city initiatives, drainage systems, electricity infrastructure, and various public facilities. At a press conference today, Urban Development Secretary Abhishek Singh briefed media on the progress and current status of these works.
He said the government has taken up extensive planning to improve the living environment in the area. Several infrastructure gaps had previously led to waterlogging and public inconvenience, prompting targeted interventions. Works that were stalled earlier have been revived, and authorities have been instructed to complete the remaining tasks within 7–15 days. Once completed, drains more than 50–100 metres in length will function efficiently, reducing waterlogging during rains.
Traffic management measures will also be introduced. Before implementing the new arrangements, a fresh assessment will be conducted to determine convenient routes for the public. The Secretary said that all pending work in the area will be completed in phases, ensuring better mobility and convenience for residents.
During the media briefing, Agartala Smart City Limited CEO Kumar Chakma gave a detailed account of the ongoing projects. He said five major development works are being executed in the Purani Hawar region. Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, during his recent visit, had stressed the need to finish these works quickly to reduce congestion in the city.
Work is progressing on the 2.20 km drainage upgrade, a crucial component of the area’s drainage network. Additionally, the 10.20 km drainage line project has reached an advanced stage, with the final phase nearing completion. Officials said project execution has accelerated significantly, and the goal is to complete most works before the next monsoon.
Speaking at the press meet, TUI MNL Technical Officer Sudhir Sen said over 160 light poles are being installed in the Purani Hawar and surrounding locations to improve night-time visibility and enhance safety. Work will be completed shortly.
Traffic SI Debvrata Sen added that the traffic department is actively reviewing congestion patterns and will implement new route plans soon to ensure smoother movement for the public.
Authorities confirmed that all development works are being closely monitored to ensure timely completion and to provide long-term relief to residents of Agartala Purani Hawar.
