Tripura, 22 Sep 2025: Science, Technology & Environment Minister Animesh Debbarma has urged citizens to follow strict environmental guidelines during the upcoming Durga Puja, Laxmi Puja, and Kali Puja to ensure pollution-free celebrations. He made this appeal at a press conference held today at the State Secretariat.
The Minister informed that during the festive days — Durga Puja (September 29 – October 2, 2025), Laxmi Puja (October 6, 2025), and Kali Puja (October 20, 2025) — microphones and musical instruments will not be allowed from midnight to 6 AM. Use of microphones and firecrackers within 100 meters of hospitals, educational institutions, and courts will also be prohibited. Firecrackers generating sound above 90 decibels are banned for manufacturing, sale, and use.
As per the notification of the Science, Technology & Environment Department (dated 30-10-2018), only firecrackers approved by the Petroleum & Explosive Safety Organisation (PESO) can be used, and strictly between 8 PM to 10 PM. Organizers of puja or cultural programs must seek prior permission from the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) for use of loudspeakers.
The Minister further stated that the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) and chemical-based synthetic colors containing heavy metals (Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic, Lead, Chromium) in idol making is strictly prohibited. Only natural, biodegradable colors can be used. Idols cannot exceed 24 feet in height, and puja pandals must not be taller than 40 feet.
Immersion of idols must take place on designated days and at specified locations determined by the district administration, municipal bodies, and local urban councils, following all immersion rules. Vehicles carrying idols for immersion may use microphones only with prior permission and within prescribed sound limits. The use of sound limiters has been made mandatory for all sound systems and public address systems.
The government has also banned the use of single-use plastic and thermocol items in puja pandals, idol making, prasad distribution, and related activities. Only eco-friendly materials should be used.
Minister Animesh Debbarma appealed for collective awareness and cooperation to make this year’s festive season safe and environmentally sustainable.
The press conference was also attended by Chief Secretary of Science, Technology & Environment Department Chaitanya Murti, Tripura Pollution Control Board Chairman Dr. K. Shashikumar, West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, and district police officer Namit Pathak.
