Agartala, September 14, 2025: A major breakthrough has been made in the sensational ₹16 crore checkbook clone scam involving the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). Police on Saturday arrested a female bank employee identified as Ramayani Srimoy, a cashier at the UCO Bank’s Agartala branch. Originally from Nagaon, Assam, she was taken into custody after weeks of protests by opposition parties demanding swift action in the case.
Following mounting pressure, the State Government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional SP Dhruva Nath to investigate the case.
Police officials confirmed that evidence recovered so far includes forged bank cards and other documents linked to the scam. “The investigation is ongoing. At present, we cannot confirm if other individuals are involved. Any further findings will be shared once verified,” said officials.
The checkbook clone scam had sparked widespread outrage after funds amounting to nearly ₹16 crore went missing from AMC accounts. Opposition parties staged multiple protests accusing the government of inaction, eventually leading to the SIT’s formation.
Authorities said further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses
