Agartala, September 5: A six-year-old boy, Jordan Jamatia, has made a remarkable recovery after doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital successfully removed a sewing needle lodged deep inside his rectum through a complex surgery.
Jordan, son of Akash Jamatia from Hadhrai under Teliamura in Khowai district, had been suffering from severe abdominal and back pain for several days. On August 29, 2025, his family brought him to the GBP Hospital Trauma Centre, where doctors admitted him and later shifted him to the General Surgery ward. An X-ray revealed a six-centimeter-long sewing needle stuck inside his rectum.
Initially, his parents were unaware of how the needle got there. Later, when asked, the child confessed that about 15–16 days earlier, while suffering from constipation, he secretly tried to remove stool using the needle, which accidentally got stuck inside. Out of fear, he did not inform anyone.
Doctors first attempted to remove the needle through per-rectal examination, but the risk of pushing it further inside made the procedure unsafe. The case was then referred to Gastroenterology specialist Dr. Shubhadip Pal, who attempted colonoscopy. However, due to a heavy stool blockage in the anal canal, the attempt failed. Even after cleaning the canal, the needle could not be retrieved.
Finally, doctors decided on a laparotomy procedure. A special surgical team comprising expert surgeons Dr. Nilutpal Chakma, Dr. Tapas Pal, and Dr. Pritam Das, along with postgraduate trainee surgeons, carried out the three-hour-long surgery on August 30, 2025. The anesthesia team included Dr. Anupam Chakraborty, Dr. Asit Bhattacharjee, and Dr. Joydeep Debnath. The operation was supported by four OT staff members.
Thanks to their coordinated efforts, the needle was successfully removed, and the boy was discharged on September 2 in stable condition. The surgery was conducted entirely free of cost.
The boy’s family expressed deep gratitude to the team of doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and hospital staff of AGMC & GBP Hospital for saving their child’s life.
