Tripura, 01 April 2025: Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 6,41,521 rural households in 1,193 gram panchayats and ADC village committees across Tripura have been provided with piped drinking water connections so far. Out of 7,50,847 rural households, this covers 85.44% of families in these areas. Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha shared this information in the state assembly today while responding to a notice by MLA Bishwajit Koloi.
The Chief Minister stated that since August 15, 2019, when the Central Government launched the Jal Jeevan Mission, the state’s Drinking Water and Sanitation Department has been working in mission mode to ensure a regular and long-term drinking water supply to every rural household. Water is being supplied from various sources, including deep tube wells, shallow tube wells, water treatment plants, and innovative projects.
However, in hilly and remote areas, where scattered households and limited groundwater sources make it difficult to set up permanent water supply sources, the government has implemented innovative projects utilizing springs, streams, reservoirs, and waterfalls. The department is working on completing this mission by December 2025. To tackle high iron content in water sources, the government has set up Iron Removal Plants (IRPs) and is working on installing more. In remote areas, drinking water is being supplied through solar-powered systems.
In places where setting up water sources is still not feasible, water is being delivered via tankers, and people are also collecting water from local sources like machinery wells, Mark-II tube wells, and ring wells. The government is conducting disinfection and maintenance of these local water sources for public health safety. In TTAADC village council areas, 1,951 deep tube wells, 5,110 shallow tube wells, 23 water treatment plants, and 174 innovative projects are supplying drinking water to 3,27,189 households. Of these, 2,67,605 families (81.78%) have already received piped water connections. More water sources are being established in ADC villages, with many nearing completion. The state government expects to ensure 100% piped drinking water coverage in ADC villages by September 2025.
