Anupam Pal, Kailashahar, 12 April 2026: Once again, a heartbreaking scene has emerged from Tripura. The deaths of two elephants within just four days in North and Unakoti districts have sparked widespread outrage. Allegations suggest that these innocent animals died due to a lack of adequate food and proper care.On April 8, a 14-year-old elephant died of starvation at Andhar Chhara in Pecharthal. Just two days later, on April 10, another 45-year-old elephant died in Thanda Chhara area under similar circumstances. In the second incident, the distressing sight of a four-year-old calf standing helplessly beside its mother’s lifeless body has deeply moved people.
Locals claim that under the guise of “donation,” elephants are being traded, leading to neglect and exploitation, with the animals ultimately paying the price. There are fears that several more elephants are currently facing the same crisis.A pressing question now arises how many more deaths will it take for the administration to act? If immediate steps are not taken, Tripura may lose one of its proud symbols, the majestic ‘Gajraj’.
