Agartala, February 28: Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder on Saturday reiterated the administration’s firm stance against illegal encroachment, urging vendors occupying government land to vacate voluntarily or face eviction.
Speaking during an inspection of the Jackson Gate area, Majumder said no illegal occupation of roads, footpaths, or government land will be tolerated. He also warned roadside vendors to remove their stalls after 11 PM, failing which municipal authorities will take action.
The Jackson Gate area has been under focus following earlier notices issued to shopkeepers to vacate government land. Despite the warnings, several vendors continued operating, prompting the corporation to initiate demolition drives. The Mayor reviewed the eviction process and said similar drives will be carried out across the city.
Majumder said the civic body has plans to develop the cleared land into a parking facility and a transit zone to ease traffic congestion. He added that the administration is also considering rehabilitation measures for vendors who cooperate with the authorities.
Highlighting traffic concerns, the Mayor said multiple congestion-prone areas, including ML Plaza and other busy stretches, have been identified. Notices have already been served to illegal occupants in these locations, and eviction drives will follow if they fail to comply.
He stressed that the primary objective is to make Agartala cleaner and more accessible, ensuring smooth vehicular movement and safe pedestrian pathways.
“The drive will continue throughout the year. It is not a one-time action. Those occupying public spaces illegally must vacate, or strict measures will be taken,” Majumder said.
The municipal administration has appealed to traders to cooperate, assuring that alternative arrangements will be explored for those who comply with the directives.
