Strong remarks signal growing tension within ruling coalition over upcoming ADC elections
Tripura, 21 Feb 2026: In a politically significant development ahead of the upcoming elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma has openly called on alliance partner Tipra Motha Party to leave the ruling coalition if it is dissatisfied.
Addressing a public gathering, the minister delivered a sharp message, questioning the party’s continued association with the BJP-led government.
“If we are so bad, why are you aligned with us? Then leave. Cross over. If the BJP is so bad, then those who stay with the BJP are also sharing that,” he said, urging Tipra Motha leaders to exit the alliance rather than criticise it from within.
Debbarma’s remarks come at a time when political tensions are reportedly rising between the BJP and Tipra Motha over strategies for the upcoming TTAADC elections. The minister’s speech is being viewed as a direct challenge to the regional party, which represents a significant section of Indigenous voters in the state.
Sources indicate that differences over political positioning, governance issues, and electoral strategies have widened in recent months, leading to increasing friction between the coalition partners.
The Tipra Motha Party, which has been vocal on issues concerning Indigenous rights and Greater Tipraland, has yet to officially respond to the minister’s comments. However, Debbarma’s statement is likely to intensify the political debate ahead of the crucial ADC polls.
Political observers believe that such public statements could impact the alliance dynamics and reshape electoral strategies in the run-up to the TTAADC elections.
As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding any change in the alliance, but the minister’s remarks have added a new dimension to Tripura’s evolving political landscape.
