Khowai, Feb 18: The 77th Shiv Chaturdashi Fair at Singichhara in Khowai has stirred fresh controversy this year over alleged mismanagement and irregularities.
The five-day fair, running from February 15 to 19, has drawn traders from across the state and outside, showcasing a wide range of goods and exhibitions. However, several complaints regarding the management of the event have surfaced.
On Tuesday, an argument reportedly broke out between a visiting shopkeeper and members of the local fair committee. The trader alleged that although he could open his stall only from the third day due to illness, he was still asked to pay the full five-day electricity charge. The incident has triggered resentment among participating traders.
Meanwhile, allegations have also emerged about the open use of “hook lines” for electricity connections in multiple stalls. Concerned residents fear that such unauthorised wiring poses serious safety risks within the crowded fair premises.
Adding to the concerns, guardians have complained that loud sound systems at the fair are causing major inconvenience to students, especially as secondary and other school examinations are currently underway.
Although the fair is organised under government initiative, locals have questioned the overall management and regulation. They claim that lack of proper supervision is gradually eroding the fair’s long-standing tradition and reputation.
Residents have urged the administration to intervene and ensure better management. Some members of the intellectual community have also warned that if alleged irregularities and self-serving interests continue to dominate the fair, its future could face serious uncertainty.
