Agartala: Feb 17. Leaders of Tipra Motha from Kanchanpur Sub-Division staged a protest rally on Tuesday and submitted two separate memorandums to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), voicing strong opposition to key administrative proposals impacting the region.
The deputation was carried out in the presence of senior party figures, including MLAs Philip Kumar Reang and Pathan Lal Jamatia, along with several other prominent local representatives.
In the first memorandum, residents opposed recent statements advocating the conversion of Kanchanpur into a Nagar Panchayat. The signatories stated that Kanchanpur falls under the jurisdiction of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and is protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. They termed any proposal to alter its constitutional status as “legally untenable and unconstitutional,” alleging that such remarks could disturb communal harmony and hurt the sentiments of indigenous communities. The memorandum urged the administration to take appropriate legal action against individuals making inflammatory statements.
In a separate memorandum addressed to the District Magistrate & Collector of North Tripura through the SDM, residents of Sakhan Serhmun Village Council strongly objected to the proposed transfer of the village council from North District to Dhalai District. They claimed that the move was initiated without consultation with the Gram Sabha or elected representatives and would adversely affect access to government services and ongoing development works.
The villagers demanded immediate withdrawal of the proposed transfer and continuation of the existing administrative arrangement under North District. Both memorandums were officially received at the SDM’s office.
