Sepahijala, Feb 16: Protesting the proposed construction of the 49th Battalion BSF headquarters in Bishramganj Nagar Panchayat area, MDC Uma Sankar Debbarma of the 19 No. Amtali-Golaghati constituency under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on Monday staged a sit-in demonstration outside the Sepahijala District Magistrate’s office.
Debbarma, accompanied by party workers and supporters, opposed the reported plan to establish the BSF headquarters at Barjala and Chikon chhara in Bishramganj. He stated that he would continue the dharna until the issue is resolved.
Senior police officials, including Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Sutradhar and Bishramganj Police Station OC Ajit Debbarma, reached the spot and attempted to persuade the protesters to shift their position. Police sources said demonstrations within 100 metres of the District Magistrate’s office are restricted under existing regulations.
The situation remained peaceful at the time of filing this report.
